“Feldenkrais® in Progress” has taken its cue from Livia Calices’ Feldenkrais event staged at exhibition curated by Ernst Caramelle at the Vienna Secession in 1994. Its goal is to present the Feldenkrais method through public interventions held in the broadest array of contexts as possible. Using the transparency of a form of public demonstration as a means to direct attention to the method and raise the general level of awareness about the quality of work Feldenkrais accomplishes, “Feldenkrais® in Progress” is a process-oriented project that attempts to find the perfect spot where art, pedagogy and guerrilla tactics meet.
These interventions move beyond the purely theoretical in order to create artistic territory in which participants and passers-by mutate into performers and audience. During the activity, directions communicated in real time over radio headsets encourage listeners to explore the range of movement possible; the introspective protection encouraged by the headphones enables interplay between our inner and outer spheres of attention. As a result, 20 to 100 participants on a single wavelength manage to invigorate our everyday ordinary existence and conquer public space through movement.
Three aspects are most central to this activity:
- Learning through the explicit realization of learning processes
- Performance as a transformation of public space into theatrical space
- Information by which the Feldenkrais Method becomes practical experience
